Winter Camp 2012

Dear Parents,

Winter Camp 2012 (Cubs)

It may be February but our camping and outdoor activities are now just around the corner. As tradition now dictates our winter camp at Ratlingate between Friday 24th February (7.30pm start) and Sunday 26th February (depart at 10.30am) will start the Camping Season.

The cost for this camp will be £30.

This year our theme is “Where on earth are we!” On the Friday night we’ll be playing wide games outside, on the Saturday the Cubs will be walking off site and geo-caching. We’ll also be orienteering on the site to familiarise the Cubs with the concept before we take on some different courses across the summer months.

The Cubs will be sleeping inside in the dormitories whilst the Scouts camp outside (Saturday only.)

Can we also ask that each child brings a traybake or similar to share over the weekend along with a £1 coin and a couple of t-towels. So often we seem to run out of these essential items and children seem only to be able to find a hand-towel when requested.

As it is half term next week please can you send an email to cubs@13thcarlisle.org marked Winter Camp – Yes Please as the header by Saturday February 18th. The medical and permission form should be returned on February 22nd along with a cheque for £30.

District CycloX - Saturday 4th February

This Saturday is the 2012 Reivers District CycloX and the Cubs have entered four teams. The event will start racing at 9.45am but the Cubs who are taking part should aim to arrive between 9.15am and 9.30am. Please be aware that the lane to Ratlingate will be very busy and you should allow plenty of time.

Old clothes, waterproofs, snack and drink are advised. A cycle helmet and necker are obligatory, the rule is always the same, no helmet - no ride. Team members who cycle around even on the grass without a helmet will disqualify their team.

Everyone competing must fill in the form below and take it with them. Please print this out and take it and give it to Mike Neile who is in charge on Saturday.

I'm afraid that I won't be there on Saturday but I wish everyone taking part the best of luck.

Supporting Scouting - Cubs Open Evening

Dear Parents,

Supporting Scouting – Cubs Open Evening (February 8^th2012)

Most parents realise that Scouting is avoluntary organisation. The Cubs at 13^thCarlisle has been very fortunate in the last few years to have a strong,committed team of trained leaders, young leaders and regular parentalhelpers. Working together they haveensured that the activities on offer have always been fun, varied and,crucially, safe.

As the advert said “Change Happenz(sic).” After six years supporting the Cubs Jonathan McKeown will be steppingdown in March to pursue other projects. Andrew Brindley, after three years with the Group, will also step downfrom the end of this month as he completes the final parts of his degree andthen moves back to Merseyside. Jonathanand Andrew have been great supporters of the both Cubs and the Group – both willbe sadly missed. We will also lose Rachel Bradley in September when she startsuniversity, and like Ben Hodgkiss, will then be only available at the start andend of terms.

The Cubs have been very fortunate tohave the support of each one of these leaders/helpers. The loss of all thisexperience means that we now need to build a new team to take Cubs forward andwe are looking for your help and support.

Everyone thinks that they haven’t thetime to commit to Scouting. We are allpushed through work and family commitments, however, helping Scouting doesn’tmean you have to give a weekly commitment – any contribution is welcomed,however large or small.

On Wednesday 8^th February wewill be holding an open night for all parents from 6.30pm until 8.30pm. On that night you can see what we get up toand speak to the current leadership team. You can take part and maybe you can help out with an activity too! Once you see what we do, and how we work, wehope that you might be tempted to join us in some capacity.

Perhaps you could help out with camps oractivities (bed and breakfast included), could you run some games or could youhelp with some of the administration. Whatever your skills, whatever the time you can spare, together we canmake a difference. You wouldn’t need towear a uniform (unless you wanted to), you wouldn’t need to come each and everyweek but you would be guaranteed to have a great time helping yourchildren!

We look forward to seeing many of youduring the meeting on Wednesday 8th February.

Ten Pin Bowling

The new term starts with a flurry of Reiver’s District events. On Thursday 26^th January it is theAnnual Ten Pin Bowling Competition at AMF Bowling, Carlisle. The Cubs have won this in both 2010 and 2011and we’d like to put up a good showing this year too!

Wewill meet at AMF at 5.50pm and your child should be ready to collect at around7.30pm.

Thecost for this is £5 and includes a meal and drink.

Sothat I can confirm places please can you return the slip and £5 (cash only please)next week - 18^th January.

District CycloX

On Saturday 4^th February it is the District CycloX at Ratlingate. Teams of four will represent their Cub Packand ride for glory through a challenging (muddy!) course through thewoods. We are prepared to enter as manyteams as we need – all you need to do is let me know by next week and be ableto get to Ratlingate with

your bike by around 9.00am on Saturday 4^th.

Calling All Cubs - bagpacking 17th December 2011

Urgent Information for All Cubs and their parents.

We have been offered today the chance to share in a bag pack at Morrisons, Carlisle from 3pm on Saturday 17th December. This is an excellent opportunity to raise funds for events in 2012 as the Christmas bag packs raise a considerable amount of money for all concerned.

We need at least 10 Cubs along with either a parent or Scout (if you have an older brother or sister in Scout's then they'll do) to come along between 3.00pm to 5.00pm or 5.00pm to 7.00pm. If you are going to London in 20012 then this will be a great way to help reduce your costs by raising some money towrds the trip. We have already raised £10 per head going - can we raise another £20 each from a bagpack?

Please email me at cubs@13thcarlisle.org to request a slot at either session. The sooner you reply - the sooner you can choose!

I'll see all of the Cubs - in full uniform on Saturday. The first group should meet at 2.55pm by the tills.

Asis usual at this time of the year our timetable can become quite hectic. There are a few changes to upcomingactivities and new dates for your diaries.

November 19^th The Group is bagpacking at Asda between 12.00pm and 4.00pm. We are asking for fifteen Cubs to help between 12.00pm and 2.00pm andanother fifteen to help between 2.00pm and 4.00pm. Please sign up before you leave tonight.Remember to come in full uniform including school trousers and shoes.

November 23^rd- No meeting tonight.

November 24^th This is our SecretSanta Shopping night. Pease meet at theScout Hut with your parents where you will be given a name and £2.00 to go andpurchase a Christmas Gift for that Cub. Youare then free to leave and shop with your parents. This needs to be wrapped and returned to Cubson Wednesday 30^th November.

November 30^th– Meeting as normal

December 4^th Nativity ChurchParade at St. Michael’s Stanwix. Pleasecome dressed as a shepherd (someone has to look after the Beavers!) or inuniform. As I stated last year – it’stea towels at the ready for this one!

December 7^th District CarolService. This year we will meet at theentrance to Upperby School on Uldale Raod before walking to St. Margaret Marys Church. We will meet at 6.20pm and the Cubs can be picked up from the same location at 8.00pm (see further post on December 2nd.)

December 14^th– No meeting tonight as this clashes with various School Performances

December 21^st We are meeting on December 21^st tobreak up that long week before Christmas. We will be excahnging Secret Santa gifts tonight!

Asda Bag Pack - November 19th

OnSaturday 19^th November the Group has arranged a bag pack at Asda toraise funds. This will take placebetween 12.00pm and 4.00pm.

Inorder to maximise the amount we can raise we need to make sure that all thetills are manned throughout the afternoon. We are looking for volunteers to work between 12.00pm and 2.00pm andfrom 2.00pm until 4.00pm. We need around15 Cubs and 15 Scouts at each of the sessions. This allows Cubs and Scouts to work together.

OnWednesday and Thursday next week there will be rota available for parents tosign up their children. Please make theeffort the effort to sign up.

Fulluniform will be required on the day – so please make sure it is washed andironed. The better the image we give, themore that we can raise.

As Christmas is getting a little closer we have looked at the upcoming timetable and want to gauge your opinion.

With the schools breaking up so ridiculously early this year on December 16th we have considered holding a meeting on Wednesday 21st rather than on January 4th. (There is already no meeting on Wednesday 14th as this clashes with Christmas performances at both Stanwix and Rockcliffe Schools.

We'd be happy to hear your responses as to which you would prefer.

Ratlingate Sleepover

Dear Parents,

Next Friday night (11th November) the Cubs are holding a sleepover at Ratlingate. This will be the culmination in a night of games and activities early in the evening.

The Cubs will meet at Ratlingate at 8.00pm on the Friday Evening and will be available to be picked up at 11.00am on Saturday morning.

The cost for this overnight experience will be £9.00 and covers the cost of Ratlingate (£5.50 per person per night) and food/heating costs.

All that the Cubs need to bring, (along with their uniform) is a change of warm clothes (including wellies, hat and gloves), torch, sleeping bag and a coat. We'll provide the rest! However, if you can provide a tray bake or similar, the Cubs will be only too happy to devour this too!

A permission to camp form will be avaialble on Wednesday evening, however, we would be grateful for an early indication if possible. Please email cubs@13thcarlisle.org if your child will be attending.

Fireworks Evening –November 2^nd 2011

OnWednesday 2^nd November we will be having a Fireworks Evening atRatlingate. This will start at 6.30pmand finish at approximately 8.00pm. Thisis a joint activity along with 18^th Carlisle Scout Group. Parents and other family members are welcometo stay too and join in the fun.

Therewill be a bonfire, fireworks and refreshments. The cost for this activity willbe £2.00 per head. This will cover the cost of the fireworks, hot dog and a drink.

Pleasemake sure that you come suitably dressed for the event and that you wear your necker. Wellies are highly recommended as Ratlingatecan get muddy during the winter months. A torch will also be useful.

Pleasecan you let your section leader know if you are attending so that we canorganise appropriate refreshments.

Reiver's District Swimming Gala 2011

Cubs and Scouts

This years Reivers District Swimming Gala will be held on Saturday 15th October at Penrith Swimming Pool. We ask that Cubs and Scouts turn up at 5.30pm ready for a 6.00pm start. All that they need to bring is their swimming gear, a drink (plastic bottles only), something (a t-shirt or towel) to wear on the poolside, £1 for their locker and loads of enthusiasm!

Heats for both Cubs and Scouts start at 6.00pm and the Gala will finish around 8.15pm. It's a great night so why not stay and support the teams.

A word of warning for those spectating - it gets very warm - so they'll be no need for the thermals. .

Let's look forward to another successful evening.

Cubs Cathedral Visit - 12th October

Next Wednesday the Cubs will meet slightly earlier at 6.20pm. We will then be walking to the Cathedral for a tour as part of work towards the Community Challenge and My Faith awards.

All the Cubs should come smartly dressed in their uniform as we will be out in the public eye!

We will finish at 8.00pm as normal and the Cubs should be collected from the Cathedral Lodge near the Early Learning Centre.

Swimming Gala and Harvest Festival

SwimmingGala and Swimming Training (1^st, 8^th and 15^th October)

The 2011 Reiver’s District Swimming Gala will be held at Penrith Leisure Centreon Saturday 15^th October. Theevent will start at 5.30pm and is normally finished by 8.30pm.
As the current holders of the Cub Scout Trophy we will once again defend itwith vigour. To do this we once againhold two practice events before the Gala itself. These will be on Saturday 1^st Octoberand Saturday 8^th October from 12.30pm – 1.30pm at the Trinity SchoolPool.

If your child would like to swim in the Gala we ask that you come and practicebefore the event. We aim to let everyonewho wants to swim take part – last year we entered three teams. All that you need to do is turn up at TrinitySchool Pool at 12.20pm so that we can start promptly at 12.30pm.

Afterour training we will have a fun session for everyone and those Cubs who wish togain one of the Swimmer badges can be tested on their swimming skills too.

Ihope to see many of you there.

HarvestFestival 2^nd October

This Sunday is the Harvest Festival Church Parade at St. Michael’s Church,Stanwix. Please be at the Church for9.20am for a 9.30am start and the service will be finished by around 10.15am. Instead of just dropping off your children whynot stay and share in the service.

TheCubs are asked to bring gifts of tinned goods (in date please!) which will beshared with Impact Housing. Gifts of fresh fruit wiould be appreciated too!

Pleasemake sure that your child is in their full uniform, sweatshirt, ironed andwashed necker, school trousers and school shoes. They should also remember to bring theircollection money.

Cubs - Fires and fun at Ratlingate

This Wednesday the Cubs are due to meet at Ratlingate for a night of games and fires. The intention is that everyone will learn how to light a fire. After the incessant rain of the last few weeks we are aware that conditions at Ratlingate are currently muddy so please make sure you wear old clothes and that you bring your wellies.

Should even more rain be forecast for Wednesday then we will meet instead at the Scout Hut and reschedule this event. We will make a decision on Wednesday morning and notify you off the decision by posting on the blog no later than 1.00pm on Wednesday.

Thanks to everyone who has replied. We are taking a group of 60 next weekend.

We have managed to reduce the costs and subsequently we are charging £12.50 per person.

Please can everyone be at Trinity School for 8.50am so that we can leave at 9.00am prompt enabling us to make the most of the day. Along with money for a snack at the pool please bring a £2 coin to exchange for a locker key. This is refundable.

Wet and Wild Trip – Sunday 18^th September

Dear Parents,

On Sunday 18^th the Cubs and Scouts are visiting Wet and Wild in North Shields, Tyne and Wear. This will be a fun day out for both sections. We intend to leave from outside Trinity School at 9.00am and travel by coach to North Shields before returning about 4.00pm. All Cubs and Scouts should travel in uniform (group t-shirt or uniform sweatshirt / shirt and necker.) They will need to bring suitable swimwear and money for a snack from the poolside café. A drink for the return journey would also be useful.

The cost for this will be £15

If you would like your child to take part then please can you complete the permission slip below and contact either David Hodgkiss for Cubs (email cubs@13thcarlisle.org) or Kenny Boom for Scouts (kenneth.boom@virgin.net) by Friday 9^th September. We appreciate that this is a tight timescale but in order to get the best prices we need to book by this Saturday!

Cubs Technology Camp 2011

Dear Parents,

Summer Technology Camp

We will be holding a Technology Camp overnight on Saturday 13^th August 2011. This will be held at the Scout Hut and start at 4.00pm.

Your child will need to bring their favourite computer game and their (named) PSP or DS. They will also need a sleeping mat, sleeping bag, spare clothes and chip money. There is no other cost for this camp.

We will be providing a Wii, Playstation and an X box along with a number of projectors and sound systems. We’ll also be playing games outside –weather permitting before visiting the Chip Shop for a late tea.

We will provide snacks and breakfast the next morning. Your children can then be collected at 9.30am on the Sunday morning.

So that we can cater for the correct numbers please can you complete the form below and return it to 96 Lansdowne Crescent (Baloo) before Thursday 11^th August.

Cub Updates - July 2011

Water Night
The final Cubs of the term will take place at Ratlingate on Wednesday 20th July. This is our Water night where everyone gets a good old soaking. Please come along at 6.30pm with your Super Soaker ready to do battle. Come in old clothes you don't mind getting wet and bring a towel too!

Summer Sleepover
This year we are having a one night Summer sleepover on Saturday 13th August. This will take place in the Scout Hut and will cost £0 - yes that's right - nothing! All you will need to bring along are a sleeping bag, mat to lie on and your chip money - as we'll be visiting the Chip Shop that evening. We will start at 4.00pm and end at 9.30am the next morning.
This will be a technology camp. We'll provide a Wii, Playstation and X-box - all you need to bring are the games and your DS or PSP too. We'll also be playing some games on the field and end with a film before bedtime.
The letter for this will be available in the next few days. If you want to then we'll need to know numbers before Thursday 11th August. Details of who to inform will be on the letter.

London Trip 2012
Thanks to all of the parents who came along last night. To recap please can you pay £10 in every first week of a month towards the cost of the camp. This makes it easy to track income and is less painful on your pocket! We still need parents who can help organise fund raising opportunities - please don't be shy!
As I mentioned we are currently organising the adults and waiting for confirmation that some are available; at present the eight adults who hope to attend are myself, Ben Hodgkiss, Michael Neile, Katherine Neile, Don McCutcheon (DC), Gavin Clarkson, Mick Goodman and Nigel Moore.

Camps in 2011-2012
Next year we have overnight camps planned for November (Ratlingate 1 night), January (Scout Hut 1 night), February (Ratlingate 2 nights), April (Ratlingate 2 nights) and June (London 2 nights.) There will also be a summer camp to somewhere nearby along with the District Cub Camp in September 2012.

Jamboree
Ben Goodman, Harry Wharam, Ben Hodgkiss and myself will all be away at the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in Sweden over the next three weeks. We'll be posting a twitter feed @cumbriagme14. Keep an eye on it and we'll keep you updated as to what we are doing. It might inspire some of our present Cubs to attend in 2015 when the Jamboree is held in Japan.

Whatever you are doing though have agreat summer and Cubs will be back on Wednesday 7th September.

London Trip 2012

Thanks to everyone who has signed up for the trip to London for the Diamond Jubilee in June 2012. So far 21 people have said that they are going and I have now booked our accommodation. We will be staying at Baden Powell House next to the Natural History Museum and a five minute walk away from Hyde Park.

I still have a few spare places so if your child would like to go please contact me.

There will be a short meeting for Parents and Cubs on Wednesday 13th July straight after Cubs (8.00pm) to pass on a few more details. I look forward to seeing you then.

Next year we are planning to take the Cubs to London to experience some of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. We will be staying in either a Youth Hostel or Baden Powell House (subject to numbers and costs.) This will replace the normal Spring Camp.

We intend to travel down to London early on the Saturday morning. Over the next two days our itinerary will include:
Visits to some of the National Museums
Visit to HMS Belfast
A trip on the London Eye
London sightseeing
Watch the Jubilee flotilla as it comes up the Thames

We intend to add to this basic schedule as other specific Jubilee celebrations are launched.

In order to start developing the basic plan we need to have numbers. I appreciate that this seems early but I need to book the accommodation soon. At the moment I expect the visit to cost up to £150 but this cost should be reduced through early booking and fund-raising. The leaders have discussed a number of fund-raising and grant applications which we hope will bring down the cost. We have also chosen to not attend the District Camp in 2011 to save money and to help spread the cost.

If you would like your child to go please complete the slip below and return it by 29^th June along with a deposit (non-refundable) of £10. Places will be limited to a maximum of 24 Cubs. If your child is due to leave for Scouts before June next year, don’t worry they will still be able to go.

This promises to be a camp with a difference and will enable the Cubs to witness what will be, no doubt, a once in lifetime event.

Please can all Cubs and Scouts remember to bring a traybake to share over the weekend. Tea towels are another luxury which often seem to be forgotten too!

As there is also a shop on the site Cubs and Scouts can bring some money to spend if they wish. For the Cubs I would advise that a maximum of £5 is sufficient. Scouts should consult with Skip on Thursday evening.

The weather forecast for the area is not brilliant for the weekend so make sure you've packed a waterproof jacket.

St. George's Day - Promise Renewal and Activities

This Saturday is the annual St. George's Day Promise Renewal. Now most eagle eyed parents will have noted that we are a little late this year, as St. George's Day fell over the Easter period.

This year the Promise Renewal for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts will held at Ratlingate and will be followed by activities on the site for those who attend (Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.)

Cubs should meet at Ratlingate at 2.00pm on Saturday and can be collected at around 4.30pm. Cubs should wear their jumper and necker and choose suitable trousers and weather dependent on the weather forecast. A drink and coat should be brought too!

This will be a good opportunity for the Cubs who have not yet completed it to finish their Outdoor Challenge Badge and also to meet other Cubs from around the District.

Spring Camp - Waddecar

At the weekend I was informed that not everyone was aware of the Spring Camp to Waddecar at the end of this month. Below is a copy of the letter sent to all Cub and Scout Parents. If anyone has not seen the letter and wishes for there child to go then please contact eith Skip or Akela this week.

Dear Parents,

Spring Camp 2011

We are holding a Spring Camp at Waddecar, Preston between Friday 27th May and Monday 30th May. The Cubs will be sleeping indoors whilst the Scouts will camping outside close-by. We will be leaving the Scout Hut by bus at 6.15pm prompt and returning at approximately 4.00pm on the Monday afternoon. This will be a very active camp, it is planned for the Cubs to go orienteering, try shooting, tackle an obstacle/assault course, go raft building and caving.

The Scouts who are attending will be planning their own activities over the weekend. They will undertake some of the activities above and also go hiking in the local area.

The cost will be approximately £75 but we are trying hard to reduce this figure. We know that you all appreciate how hard the group works to keep the costs for camps down. This camp will still be very good value and is no more expensive than our Spring Camp in 2010.

In order to plan effectively and book the activities we would like to know numbers by this week, along with a deposit of £25.

HMS Illustrious trip

Information for those going to HMS Illustrious.

Those Cubs going to HMS Illustrious (they know who they are!) need to make sure that they are at Rockcliffe School at 9.15am. The bus leaves at 9.30am but if everyone is one time, there is a chance that we can leave a ferw minutes earlier.

Please wear your uniform along with your group t-shirt and necker. Trainers are ideal footwear.

Lunch is provided as part of the cost so there is no need to bring anaything to eat except a drink for the bus.

The times for the day are:

Arrive HMS Illustrious 11.45am

Depart HMS Illustrious 3.15pm

Return Rockcliffe School 5.30pm

Don't forget the permission form which you were handed on Wednesday.

Visit to HMS Illustrious - Saturday 7th May

The Cubs have been offered a limited number of places to visit HMS Illustrious which has been organised by 1st Rockcliffe Scout Group. The ship, the last of the Invincible class carriers, is currently completing her refit at Rosyth, Edinburgh and will rejoin the fleet in the next few weeks.

This visit is taking place on Saturday May 7th and will cost £10. If you would like to go then please contact Akela as soon as possible.

No sooner than the holidays start then they draw to a close. Yes, next Wednesday Cubs return.

On Wednesday night we will be aiming to raise money for Help for Heroes by washing cars. When you drop off your child next week why not stay and have your car washed for a mere £2. You could encourage a relative to come instead.

We're providing the water and the cleaning agent, all we ask is that Cubs bring a sponge, a bucket and a watering can.
See you then (wellies and old clothes are a good idea too!)

Cubs at Laser Quest

To celebrate the Royal Wedding we are holding a Ceilidh at the Hut with dancing to “Reunion”. Cake and celebratory “bubbles” included, please bring your own drinks. There will be a raffle so donations for prizes would be appreciated. Adults £5.00 and children £3.00.

Stanwix Big Tidy - March 12th

On Saturday the Cubs and Scouts have been invited to take part in the Stanwix Big Tidy Up. This has been arranged by Carlisle City Councillor Paul Nedved. We will be meeting at Stanwix Community Association at 10.00am on Saturday morning (12^th March) and we hope that as many Cubs and Scouts can take part.

As many of the Cubs and Scouts were away last weekend we have only committed to working in the morning, but accompanied children are free to stay all day.

The City Council is providing suitable equipment and all that the Cubs / Scouts need to wear is suitable clothes (wellies or boots would be useful if you are in Rickerby Park.) Please can we ask that you wear your necker but not your sweatshirt/shirt.

Both Bruce and I will be there to supervise the Cubs and Scouts but please feel free to stay and help.

We would be grateful if you let your section leaders know this week if you are able to attend.

Cubs CycloX - Saturday 5th March

Dear Parents,

On Saturday the Cubs will be having their own CycloX competition at Ratlingate. This will be run in three age categories, 8 and under (Year 3), 9 and under (Year 4) and 10 and under (Years 5 and 6.) If any children who are not camping wish to take part then all they need to do is come to Ratlingate for 10am along with their bike and a cycle helmet.

We will be finished by 4.00pm in the afternoon.

If you are going then you will need to fill a one day activity form, available from the group website. Don’t forget to bring your packed lunch (or we can cater for you for a nominal fee) and your desire to win. Please let Ben, Lisa or Mike know on Wednesday if you are coming.

Church Parades

The dates for Church parades at St. Michael's Church this year are:

3rd April - Mothering Sunday Parade Service

19th June - Summer Parade Service*

2nd October - Harvest Festival

4th December - Nativity Parade Service

The services are always good fun. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts should be at the Church in full uniform (school trousers, shoes, ironed and clean uniform) by 9.20am. The service lasts around 50 minutes and all parents are welcome. Following the service there is coffee in the Parish Centre to which all are invited.

* Ben has moved the Summer Parade Service from June 5th to its new date of June 19th to avoid a clash with the half term holidays.

Badges and Neckers

Parents,

Please can I ask that you sew all of your child’s badges onto their uniform. Some children have had badges awarded but these don’t make it onto their uniform. Each time we re-issue a badge, that because of this, has been lost it costs the group. I would like to reduce this extra cost if at all possible.

The round activity badges go on the left sleeve whilst the square challenge badges are sewn on the right breast.

A copy of the badge diagram was sent out last week but it can also be found on the website for easy reference.

I would also like to remind all parents that their child should wear their gold and black necker each week. If they have a pirate necker then they can wear this too should they wish.

Winter Camp 2011

Dear Parents,

Winter Camp 2011

It may be February but our camping and outdoor activities are now just around the corner. As tradition now dictates our winter camp will be at Ratlingate between Friday 4^th March (7.00pm start) and Sunday 6^th March (depart at 10.30am.)

The cost for this camp will be £30.

This year we are having a cycling and CycloX theme. All of the Cubs will have the opportunity to work towards their Cyclist badge and work through some of the elements of the Bikeability Scheme (the new Cycling Proficiency.)

The Cubs will be sleeping inside in the dormitories whilst the Scouts camp outside.

The Winter Camp has become very popular and I can truly say that there’s never a dull moment! Normal kit applies but we ask that all parents send their child with warm clothing that is suitable for the time of year. Wellies are essential at Ratlingate in the winter. Don’t forget that to take part in the Cycling you must bring both your bike (please check that the brakes are working and tyres inflated) and a helmet. These are compulsory. No helmet – no ride.

Can we also ask that each child brings a traybake or similar to share over the weekend along with a £1 coin. So often we seem to run out of these essential items and children seem only to be able to find a hand-towel when requested.

Please can you a medical and permission form if your child/ren are planning to attend and return this by February 16th along with a cheque for £30.

Cubs Cancelled - Thursday 2nd December

After reading the forecast for tonight, which indicated temperatures below -5c at 6.00pm, I have decided to cancel the Secret Santa evening. Although I would still like the Cubs to purchase a Secret Santa Gift for another Cub this can as easily be accomplished at the weekend and in warmer weather. Dragging the Cubs (and their parents) around carlisle tonight seems unfair.
So - how do we proceed from here?
Please send me a text stating your child's name and I will return the text with the name of your secret Santa. Then please purchase a gift for no more than £2 and I will refund you the money. Please bring your gifts, wrapped, to the Carol Service on Wednesday night next week.

Cubs - End of Term Update

With December almost here there are a few changes to our normal timetable.

No Meeting Wednesday 1st December

Thursday 2nd December - we meet at the Scout Hut at 6.30pm. You will be given a name for our Secret Santa and a £2.00 coin. You then leave and go late night shopping with one of your parents to find a suitable gift for your name. This then needs to be wrapped and brought to the Carol Service on Wednesday 8th December (see below.)

Saturday 4th December - Bag packing at Tesco. This is an important fundraising opportunity. All we ask is that a parent accompanies their child for a two hour stint to raise money. Please email chair@13thcarlisle.org for a slot.

Sunday 5th December - Nativity Church parade at St. Michael's Church, Stanwix. All of the Cubs have been invited to come along in costume. Details will be available on Thursday but basically it's tea-towels at the ready!

Wednesday 8th December - District Carol Service at ur lady and St. Joseph's, Warwick Road. We will meet at the Scout Hut at 6.15pm to walk to the Church as a group. All the children should come in full uniform and bring a wrapped gift for under-privaleged children. This gift can be a toy or game that has been outgrown but is still in good wroking order. This should be wrapped and a label stuck to it indicating whether or not it is for a boy or girl and an approximate age eg. 7-9 years. We will return to the Scout Hut for the children to be collected at about 8.00pm.

The Carol Service will be the last meeting before Christmas. Cubs will return again on Wednesday 5th January.

Wide Games and Sleepover at Ratlingate – Friday 26^th November

On Friday 26^th November we will sleeping over at Ratlingate and playing some wide games outside in the dark. We will meet at Ratlingate between 7.30pm and 8.30pm to allow those who wish to go to the Stanwix School Christmas Fair.

The Cubs will be sleeping inside in the dormitories and all they will need (apart from their uniform) is a spare set of warm clothes, a sleeping bag and £7.00 to cover the cost of the centre and breakfast.

The Cubs can be picked up at 10.00am the following morning.

If your child wishes to go then please return the slip next week. (Medical forms will be available next Wednesday.)

District Ten Pin Bowling Evening – Thursday 20^th January 2011

In January we will attending the District ten Pin Bowling Competition on Thursday 20^th January. This will be in lieu of a meeting on January 19^th. We are currently the District Champions and would love to retain the trophy.
In order to attend we need to book now so it is important that I know who will be going.

Finnish Evening

Kilke Finnish Evening 2010

We would be delighted if you could join us at our Finnish Evening at 6.30pm on Thursday 11^th November at the Trinity School Scout Hut where the Scouts and Explorers will be giving various presentations, slideshows and videos about their experiences during our recent trip to Kilke 2010, Evo National Park, Finland.

All Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and their respective parents are welcome.

A selection of traditional Finnish foods, fondues, and other refreshments will be served and there will be a raffle for a variety of prizes with a Finnish flavour.

I do hope you will be able to join us and look forward to seeing you there.
