Skiing to Edinburgh

11th March 2009

Dear Parents,

Cubs / Scouts Skiing Trip – Saturday March 28th 2009

Following the recent ski training we have planned a trip to the Midlothian Ski Centre, Edinburgh, on March 28th. We will leave, by coach, from Trinity School at 8.30am prompt on the morning and expect to be back around 6.00pm. The day will look something like this:

8.30am depart Carlisle
11.00 am arrive Edinburgh
11.30am – 2.30pm Ski practice
2.30pm lunch and après ski
3.30pm depart Edinburgh
6.00pm arrive Carlisle

The cost for the day will be £20.00 per child. The cost includes the hire of boots, skis and helmets which are now compulsory for everyone under eighteen.
Please can you bring the completed reply slips to either Cubs or Scouts on March 18th and 19th so that we have a good idea of numbers.

Each person will need to bring suitable clothes that cover the entire body, waterproofs, gloves and a packed lunch. A small amount of spending money is also advisable as you can buy hot drinks, ice creams and more in the centre café.

Last year many of the Cubs / Scouts brought games or MP3 players to occupy themselves on the journey (PSP, Nintendo DS, Gameboy etc.) This is acceptable but these are brought at the owner’s risk.

Yours sincerely,

David Hodgkiss – Cub Scout Leader
John Wylie – Scout Leader

Lost! Coat enters parallel universe!

Before half -term a coat was mistakenly taken home by one of the Beavers who left his own unnamed coat behind. The owner of the coat, Louis Graham, is anxious for its return. Please can you check that your child has not come home in the wrong coat and by error it is still hanging unnoticed at the foot of your stairs.

Essential detail - it's green and it has his name in it.

Please ring Lisa if you find the coat and we can let Louis have his favourite coat back.

So go on and check!

Thanks.

Christmas Carol and Nativity Services

Christmas is coming!

Oh yes it is!

The Beavers, Cubs and Sccouts will be attending two different church services during the next fortnight. The first is the Christmas Nativity Church Parade at St. Michael's Church on Sunday 7th December. Each section is doing something different but Ben Phillips, the vicar, has asked Cubs to come dressed as shepherds on the day.

Tea-towels at the ready then!

The following Thursday is the District Carol Service, the sixers are all taking part in a competition on the night and we don't want to lose! More details on Wednesday. We realise that this clashes with Christmas performances at Kingmoor Junior, St. Monica's and Rockcliffe Schools but we still expect all of the other Cubs, Scouts and Beavers to attend.

Please can everyone bring a gift to the service. This does not need to be new, a used but well cared for toy that you will no longer use is a great gift. Please make sure that the gift is wrapped and a label is attached saying boy/girl and an approximate age.

Please read your section timetable and/or speak to one of the leaders for further details.

Swimming Gala Results

Well done to everyone who took part in the Reiver's District Swimming Gala. I hope that everyone had as good a night as I did.
The Cubs managed to retain their trophy with the A Team coming in first overall and the B Team finishing third. The Scouts put up a valiant effort but had to settle for second and third places in the 12 and under and 14 and under events.
There were a great many excellent performances, not least of all from the adults in the crowd.
Thanks to all.

Reivers District Swimming Gala

Further details for the Swimming Gala on Saturday 11th October.

Please meet at Penrith Swimming Pool at 5.30pm. The Gala starts at 6.00pm prompt so it is important to be there on time. Please bring your swimming gear, a towel / t-shirt to wear on the poolside, a drink in a plastic bottle (it gets very hot) and £1 for your locker.

YOU MUST COME IN UNIFORM (I.E. POLO SHIRT AND ‘NECKER)

The Cubs are entering three teams in the Gala, each of which has a captain. The A Team is captained by Charlie McSkeane, the B Team by Drew Moore and the C Team by James Atkinson.

When you are by the poolside you must sit down when asked and keep away from the edge of the pool. Supporting your team is obligatory but bad sportsmanship will not be tolerated.

The Gala is run on a heats basis with the fastest five teams making it through to the finals. Therefore winning a heat may not be enough – so go for it in the fastest time you can manage.

The Gala is normally over by 8.00pm. Timings are tight so you must listen to the officials and be ready for your race.

Most importantly do your best, enjoy yourselves and have a laugh.

See you Saturday.

Cubs - Water Night 9th July

OK - it's that time of year again. Yes it's time for water madness, Neil and Vicki to get a soaking and Akela to laugh smugly because I always get wet.

Don't forget your super soaker or similar tomorrow. Don't come in your uniform but make sure that you bring old clothes, a towel and something dry and warm if you become cold. I can guarantee though that you'll get very, very wet.

Oh - don't shoot your weapons in the Scout Hut or start before you get there. Patience is everything!

Start Times

To all Parents,

Recently a number of parents have been dropping off their children early for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Though all the leaders appreciate your support in ensuring that meetings begin on time, can we please remind you that children should not be dropped off more than than ten minutes before the start of a meeting. Parents should also check that the leaders are able to safely supervise their children and that child protection ratios e.g. a minimum of two leaders or adults, are in place before they leave.

Therefore the ealiest time before a scheduled meeting start that children should arrive is:
Beavers - 6.05pm for 6.15pm
Cubs - 6.20pm for 6.30pm
Scouts - 7.20pm for 7.30pm*

*This allows Beavers to end and depart before Scouts start to arrive.

Many thanks.

You will need a sleeping bag.

Easter Briefing

I hope that everyone is enjoying the Easter break but with the new term only a week away its time to bring you up to date on a number of events and issues.

Leaders

Without the support of the Leaders there would be no Beavers, Cubs or Scouts. All of them give up their time freely to pass on their skills and experiences to YOUR children. (Bruce Kirton is fast approaching 15 years as a leader.) Could you not do the same?

We are still in need of more leaders, especially In Beavers and Cubs. With Barbara Wrightson having a break due to work pressures, Jane Moore moving on from Cubs in December the time to find new leaders is upon us. Could you be the next leader to fill one of these vacancies? Yes we offer training, yes we give you a necker and shirt/polo shirt but most importantly we offer you FUN!!! Please talk to the existing leaders if you think you could help.

Kandersteg 2009

Thanks to all who have replied so far. I'm about to confirm our places so can anyone who wants to go and who has not yet returned their deposit to Skip (Bruce Kirton) please make contact with either him or myself as soon as possible. I have to book specific rooms depending on numbers and the gender balance. (Remember to go you must be 12 by August 31st 2009.)

Subs

Please check your bank statements if you are paying by standing order – a number of standing orders seem to be intermittent or not working. If one of them is you can you please contact me and I'll pass your details on to Ganga. You can bring your accounts up to date by paying off any debts by cheque or cash.

St. Georges Day Parade

This is April 20th this year at St. Aidan's Church. All Beavers, Cubs and Scouts should meet at the Scout Hut by 2.15pm on that afternoon. You must wear your full uniform with school / scout activity trousers and shoes.
This is not an optional event. We require everyone's attendance. Football, cricket or whatever can take second place on this weekend.

Ennerdale Camp

The Cubs and Scouts will be camping over the bank holiday weekend at Ennerdale on May 23rd – 26th. A letter will be going out soon giving further details and cost. The Cubs will be using the Ennerdale building whilst the Scouts are outside camping in patrols.

District Cub Camp

The Cubs will be away again on the weekend of June 13th – 15th at Ratlingate for the District Cub Camp. This year the camps them is conservation and the environment. The cost for this camp will be £25. All the Cubs will be outside under canvas.

Beaver Sleepover

Lisa and I have provisionally arranged a Beaver sleepover for Saturday 28th June for the older Beaver Scouts. Again further details will be available nearer the time.

Last year many of the Scouts brought games or MP3 players to occupy themselves on the journey (PSP, Nintendo DS, Gameboy etc.) This is acceptable but these are brought at the owner’s risk.

Winter Camp 2008

Winter Camp 2008

Dear Parents,

We are holding are annual winter camp between Friday 22nd and Sunday 24th February at Ratlingate. The Cubs will be sleeping indoors whilst the Scouts will be camping outside.

This year we will be doing some local walking using Ratlingate as the base. We hope to complete another section of the route of Hadrian's Wall. This means that your child will need to bring suitable footwear for walking in. (This can either be walking type boots or a sturdy pair of trainers. Wellies could be worn but soon become uncomfortable.)

Along with our walking we will be playing some games and working towards our Outdoor Challenge, Nights Away, Chef, Hikes Away and Outdoor Challenge Plus badges.)

The camp will start at 7.00pm when the Cubs should be dropped off at Ratlingate and the Cubs can be picked up at 11.00am on Sunday. We would appreciate help to clear up on the Sunday Morning from 10.00an onwards. All Cubs and Scouts must come in their uniform.

The cost for the weekend will be £15.00.

Please can I ask that each Cub brings with them a tea-towel or two and a tray-bake or similar to share with everyone for snacks during the weekend. They should also bring a small ( SMALL !!) rucksack to carry their waterproofs, lunch and a drink in when they are walking.

Gloves, hat, waterproofs and warm clothing are essential.

A camp permission form is available on the website www.13thcarlisle.org in Letters and Downloads. (There you will also find a kit list for the weekend. ) Please fill this in and return it, along with your payment, in an envelope. Cheques should be made payable to 13th Carlisle Scout Group and should have the name of your child written on the reverse. We must know by 18th February at the latest if your child is going so that we can plan the catering and sleeping arrangements. Please e-mail cubs@13thcarlisle.org.uk if your child is attending.

Remember that February is a cold month. Please pack appropriately.

Yours sincerely,

David Hodgkiss (Akela)

Arnold Robson

You may have read in the Cumberland News of the death last Sunday of Arnold Robson at the age of 102. Arnold was one of the earliest members of 13th Carlisle and last year related his experiences to the Scouts and Explorers.
Arnold attended the first World Scout Jamboree held at Olympia in 1920. He was also a Kings Scout - getting the highest award in Scouting.
We send our condolences to his family at this difficult time.

Ten Pin Bowling Details

Dear Parents,
There will be no Cubs on Wednesday 23rd January. Instead we will meet on Tuesday 22nd January at Hollywood Bowl for the District Ten Pin Bowling Competition. All of the Cubs are eligible to enter and the competition is decided by aggregating the scores of the best four Cubs in each group. It is very definitely a fun occasion.

Please can you let me know if your child will not be attending as soon as possible as I have to give approximate numbers by the weekend.

The evening will start at 5.20pm when the Cubs should meet at Hollywood Bowl. They must come in uniform and bring with them £5.00 which is part payment for the event. The remainder of the cost will be met out of subs. The event will finish at 7.45 approximately.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Yours sincerely,

David Hodgkiss (Akela)
