Firework and Bonfire Fun
Dear Parents,
Beaver, Cub and Scout Bonfire Celebrations
On Wednesday 3rd November all three sections will be meeting at Ratlingate from 6.30pm. On that night we will be having some firework fun, along with a bonfire and a sausage or two. We will be finished around 8.00pm and parents are welcome to stay.
In order to help pay for the event we would be grateful if Beavers, Cubs and Scouts would contribute £2.00 on the night.
Please can you make sure that your child is suitably dressed, aware of the basics of firework safety (all the sections will have covered this beforehand) and that they bring a torch.
We look forward to seeing you on November 3rd.
Yours sincerely,
David Hodgkiss – on behalf of all the Leaders

Swimming Gala
This years Reivers District Swimming Gala will be held on Saturday 16th October at Penrith Swimming Pool. We ask that Cubs and Scouts turn up at 5.30pm ready for a 6.00pm start. All that they need to bring is their swimming gear, a drink (plastic bottles only), something (a t-shirt or towel) to wear on the poolside, £1 for their locker and loads of enthusiasm!
Heats for both Cubs and Scouts start at 6.00pm and the Gala will finish around 8.15pm. It's a great night so why not stay and support the teams.
A word of warning for those spectating - it gets very warm - so they'll be no need for the thermals.
Following the gala we normally head into Penrith for a well earned treat - this year we'll all be heading to McDonalds.
Let's look forward to another successful evening.

Please bear with us as this upgrade is carried out.

Cubs Summer Camp 2010 (Update)
This is a copy of the letter which will be delivered to all participating Cubs during the next week.
25th July 2010
Cubs Summer Camp 2010
As promised – here are the details for the Cubs Summer Camp.
The camp will take place at Scarness, Bassenthwaite between Friday 20th August and Sunday 22nd August. Cubs should be dropped off at Bassenthwaite between 6.00 and 7.00pm. They can be picked up again at 4.30pm on the Sunday evening.
The site is set beside Bassenthwaite Lake and has a number of huts used for a kitchen, dining room and storage. There are also toilets and hot showers.
The cost for the camp will be £50.
Over the weekend the Cubs will have the opportunity to sail, canoe and kayak. Instruction will be provided by qualified instructors. Whilst on the water the Cubs have to wear life jackets and there will also be a safety boat on constant standby.
Waterproofs and lifejackets are provided. All that your child needs to bring are a pair of trainers which they don't mind getting wet and clothes to wear under their waterproofs. Packing an extra fleece is a good idea for if the weather is chilly these can be worn under their waterproofs and dry quickly. All other kit should be brought as usual (including your own waterproofs for evening wear.) You may find a second towel useful too!
Please note that as we are sleeping outside in tents both a sleeping bag and a sleeping mat are required. You should also bring a torch.
Accompanying this letter are a medical / permission form, kit list and map showing the location of Scarness. Should you have though, any further questions – no matter how trivial, then please do not hesitate to contact me.
We would be grateful if all the Cubs attending can bring a traybake with them along with a tea-towel. Thankyou.
Yours sincerely,
David Hodgkiss

Summer Camp (Cubs)
23rd June 2010
Dear Parents,
Summer Camp to Bassenthwaite – August 20th – 22nd 2010
Good news. At last we have been able to confirm the dates for the Summer Camp. This year the Cubs will be camping at Scarness, Bassenthwaite between Friday 20th and Sunday 22nd August. During this time they will be sailing, canoeing and kayaking on Bassenthwaite. All tuition is provided by experienced instructors and waterproofs and life jackets are provided as a matter of course.
The camp will cost a maximum of £50 and this will cover the costs of sailing instruction, camping, food and a special t-shirt and 'necker which we are using for the occasion. In order to keep the costs down we are hoping that parents can convey their children to and from the camp. The cost of a bus or minibus (which wouldn't be otherwise used) are expenses which we're trying to avoid.
We will be sleeping in tents on this camp.
This is a repeat of the 2007 camp which was very enjoyable. As on that camp we are limiting numbers to a maximum of 25 children. It will be a case of first come, first served.
At the end of the weekend, everyone who attends will have completed the Water Activities badge, Camper badge and added further Nights Away to their tallies.
If your child would like to go then they must have either completed their Swimmer Stage 1 badge or be able to swim to that level. If you are not sure of this then please speak to me. Other recognised swimming awards are acceptable if your child has not yet had the opportunity to complete their Swimmer Stage 1.
If your child wants to go then please can you complete the attached form and return this, along with a £20 deposit (the balance can be paid at the start of the camp) by Wednesday 7th July. I will then forward to those going further details and the necessary paperwork.
I look forward to hearing from you all.
Yours sincerely,
David Hodgkiss

District Raft Race 2010
23rd June 2010
Dear Parents,
District Raft Race 2010
This Saturday (26th June) is the District Raft Race. This takes part at Talkin Tarn from 3.30pm. raft building and testing lasts for two hours with the first race starting between 5.00 and 5.30pm. We are entering two rafts each with two teams (16 people altogether.)
If your child wants to attend then you will have to:
- Contact me (01228 594622 or email david.hodgkiss@btinternet.com) before Friday.
- Complete the attached one day activity form.
To take part you must be able to swim and have completed at least the Stage 1 Swimmer or equivalent. You will need a full set of spare clothes on the day, along with a towel and sun cream. Money will be useful if you want to buy an ice cream.
I realise that this clashes with the Stanwix School Fayre but, as long as I know you are coming and that have arrived by 4.30pm that will be fine.
If you want further details then please contact me and I look forward to seeing you on Saturday.
Yours sincerely,

If you have any barrels, floatation devices or similar then we'd be grateful if we could borrow them. We're also looking out for life jackets and if you or your family have any then could we borrow them for the day?

If you take travel medication then please take this before you leave and hand in any other medication to either Akela or Skip.

Please can everyone remember a tray bake or similar. We'd also appreciate it if everyone brings a couple of tea-towels and knows how to use them.
Spending Money
We will allow spending money to be brought this time. The maximum is £10 for Scouts and £5 for Cubs. This should be handed to Akela (Cubs only.)

Both the Cubs and Scouts will be spending time in Edinburgh. The Cubs are visiting the Castle and also hoping to take in a dungeons tour. The Scouts will be skiing or visiting Dynamic earth and also taking in the sights on the Sunday.
Please bring a small day-sack and drinks bottle with you. No bottle means no drink! No day-sack means it's difficult to carry a coat and your sandwiches too.

Cubs- Walking on Saturday 8th May
On Saturday May 8th the Cubs will be going walking. The location is a closely guarded secret (an anagram of the location is Bear Foe Mist.)
We will leave the Scout Hut at 9.30am in the morning and expect to be back around 5.00pm. The only cost will be a contribution towards the transport - which will be finalised once we know how many Cubs will be going. All that the Cubs will need on the day are sensible clothes, walking boots or strong trainers, a packed lunch and waterproof coat.
I will be reminding the Cubs this Wednesday and handing out a permission form. An early indication of who will be going, would though, be much appreciated.

St. George’s Day Service
St. George's Day Service
Sunday 25th April is the date for this year's St. George's Day Service at St. Aidan's Church, Carlisle. The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts should meet at the Scout Hut for 2.10pm that afternoon and we will walk as a group to the service. We will then walk back at the end and expect to be back around 4.00pm.
The St. George's Day service is where all members of the Scout Association renew their promise each year and resultantly is seen as very important. This will also be the last Service at St. Aidan's, for as from 2011the Service will form part of an activity day at Ratlingate.
So in answer to the question "Do I have to go?" the answer is a resulting "YES!!"
Please make sure that you come in full uniform with polished shoes, school trousers, and ironed 'necker and with all the badges you have earned sewn on. Remember to bring your collection too!

Cub Winter Camp
We start at 7.00pm on Friday night and you can be picked up at 10.30am on Sunday morning. Cubs will not though, be able to go until they have helped clean the building.
Please remember to bring a traybake with you to share with everyone.
Can each Cub also bring two £1 coins with them. This weekend we'll need to use the heating and the meter only takes £1 coins. The more coins we have - the warmer you'll be!
Bring a clothes pen to peg your wellies together. It helps them to avoid getting mixed up and lost.
With over 40 people in the building this weekend it will be crowded. Therefore make sure that all your clothes are named and that you put away your own gear. Also please can you make sure that you have clothes which are suitable for the colder weather we are experiencing at the moment. As always pack extra socks - there is nothing worse than cold feet. Remember - don't bring any jeans!! Wellies will be necessary (if you haven't got any then bring a pair of boots) but make sure they are named.

Winter Camp – Scouts Only
Dear Parents,
Winter Camp 2010
Regrettably, due to unforeseen circumstances the winter camp which would have been at Ratlingate between Friday 26th February and Sunday 28th February is having to be cancelled for the Scouts. This is due to a lack of leaders because of work commitments over the weekend. The Cubs will camp as planned.
Obviously this was not what we wanted to do, and have looked at several options which were just not viable in our eyes.
We apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused and hope to see you all on the next camp in May, 28th – 31st the Spring Camp at Bonaly, Edinburgh.

Cyclo X
On Saturday 6th February Reivers District are holding their annual CycloX at Ratlingate. This involves teams of fours following a circuit through the site in a relay. The fastest teams then qualify for the final.
The event starts at 8.45am and will last throughout the morning. All that the Cubs require to take part is a fully working bike, a cycle helmet, old clothes and a little stamina! The ruk
Les are simple – go as fast as you can and always wear your helmet or the team will be disqualified – even if you're just playing about on the field. The following is from the organiser –
At the last event I was very disappointed to have to continually tell people including adults to wear helmets. As a new rule I will be bringing in the option for a team from any section to be disqualified by the person in charge if after 2 warnings any person from or related to that group continues to ride without a helmet at any time during the day.
I'm willing to enter as many teams as there are participants who wish to go. So if you wish to go please fill in the attached form and return it to Cubs on Wednesday. Unfortunately without a form you'll be unable to take part. We will meet at 9.20am at Ratlingate.
Please let me know by Wednesday if your child will be taking part.
