Goodbye blog - hello blogs!

Hi everyone,

In the next few weeks this blog will be redundant.  Instead there will be three new blogs, one for each section.  These can be found at:

13thcarlislebeavers.blogspot.com

13thcarlislecubs.blogspot.com

13thcarlislescouts.blogspot.com

Each blog will be administered by the section concerned rather than centrally as before.  We hope that this will be an effective method of communication for you all.  Links to all the blogs can be found on the website.

The Cubs blog is running already so please check it out for details of this weeks activities and the Beavers and Scouts blogs will come online over the next few days.

Cumbaree 2013

You may have seen reports in the press about a number of children being hurt when inflatables blew over at Cumbaree 2013.  I am sure that you would want to join with all the leaders in wishing those who were affected a speedy recovery.

13th Carlisle Scout Group Ceilidh 20th April 2013

The theme of this Ceilidh, to be held in the Scout Hut on Saturday, 20th April 2013 is “Picnic and Puds”. The Ceilidh will start at 7.30.

This event is being held to raise funds for the Scouts trip to Kandersteg. You bring your own drinks and picnic supper and we will sell you a delectable pudding for £2.00.

The cost of admittance to this wonderful event, with music provided by Reunion, is £6.00 per adult and £2.00 per child for the first 2 children. You don’t have to pay for any other children in your family.

There will a baking competition for the children who attend so please encourage your Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood wannabees.

We will have a limited number of drinks and snacks for sale if you don’t want to bring your own.

We will also be having a Tombola so, as usual, donations for prizes would be appreciated.

If you want to attend please let a Leader know and they will record your name etc and, more importantly, take your money. Space will be limited so don’t delay.

Bouldering - Wednesday 20th February

Well as I write this half-term has officially come to an end and only the weekend lies before us all and the inevitable return to school.  That though means Cubs are back!!!

On Wednesday we will be bouldering at Eden Rock at Durranhill.  We will meet there at 6.30pm for a 6.45pm briefing, ready to start climbing from 7.00pm.  You need to come in uniform, necker plus jumper or t-shirt, wear sensible trousers (trackies or similar) and trainers.  You will be active.  Whilst you are climbing you should leave your necker in a bag along with a drink - you'll need one!

The cost for this is £5 so please bring some cash - no cheques please.

There is a form to complete that you must bring with you.  I will email this to you all over the weekend.  It asks questions about safety - the accompanying rules booklet details what is acceptable.  Basically though you shouldn't rely on the mats at the base of the wall to protect you.  They will lessen any fall but don't climb higher than you can jump or fall safely.  Bouldering tests your skills on staying on the face, even if that is only an inch above the mat.  Going higher doesn't get you extra credit - it just allows you more options.

We have hired some instructors for the evening - listen to their advice. We are also taking Tony Morley (Archie's Dad) who has climbed for many years and is full of good advice.

Wednesday will be a great night and I look forward to seeing you all there.

CycloX and Disco

The CycloX scheduled for February 2nd has been cancelled and will hopefully be rearranged soon.

I would also be grateful if you could let me know if your child will not be attending Cubs on Wednesday due to the clash with a school disco.

Thank you.

Cubs New Year Message

A Happy New Year to everyone!  Thank you for your messages, cards and gifts.  They were very much appreciated by the Leaders.

There are a few updates of which you should be aware.

Firstly please visit the blog site (13thcarlislescoutgroup@blogspot.com) to register your email address  as this will now send blog posts direct to the inbox of your choice.  This will ensure that everyone gets the information as soon as it is updated.  We still have a few issues with Twitter but hope to have it sorted soon.

Secondly check out our YouTube for the 2012 Cubs Annual Review.  It should bring back some happy memories.

Thirdly a new timetable will be ready before we met again.  Keep an eye of the website for an update.

And finally the Cubs will be visiting the Manchester Velodrome (National Cycling Centre) on April 20th to take part in a training event.  If you'd like to see what you'll be doing then check out the video from BBC Breakfast, as they under.take the same challenge.  So if you're in Year 4 or 5 and fancy being a Boardman, Hoy, Kenny, Pendleton or Wiggins then this will be the activity for you!

See you all on January 9th 2013.  Will you be one of the new sixers or seconders - you'll have to be there to find out!!
