Cubs Update

Firstly my apologies for not making Wednesday evening but Ofsted choose Thursday and Friday last week last week to pop in for a coffee and chat! Thanks must go to Lisa Taylor who covered for me on the night.

I realise some of you may have been trying to contact me. If you haven't caught me then please try again.

Just to remind you all there is no Cubs this Wednesday as instead we meet at Ratlingate on Thursday where we will be putting up the tents for the weekends District Cub Camp. Unfortunately I will not be available on Thursday as I have to attend a meeting which was postponed due to Ofsted. So on Thursday John Wylie, the Scout Leader, will lead Cubs along with Mike Neile, Jonathan McKeown, Ben, Vicki and Andrew Brindley. If parents can stay to help then it will be much appreciated for many hands make light work - especially when putting up the Mess Tent.

On Friday please arrive between 6.30 and 7.15pm. Don't come before. There will be a lot of traffic on the Ratlingate lane so be patient. I will post the finish time on the blog and ensure that a note is given to all parents on Thursday night.

Are you coming - please let me know if you want to the come to the camp but didn't say on Wednesday by sending me a text.

The following Monday (28th September) we are inviting all Cubs and Scouts who would like to take part in the Swimming Gala on October 10th to come along to Trinity Pools (7.30 - 8.30pm) for a practise. Last year we entered three teams in the Gala and had a great time- winning it as well. I really want to defend the title so find your towel, bikini and goggles and come along.

That's it for now. More news later in the week.

Kandersteg 2009

It is important that all parents, young people and leaders attend a meeting at the Scout Hut on Wednesday 29th July at 7.00pm. This is to finalise details about Kandersteg, go over the timetable, funding news, provide information on the Emergency Contact and much more. Make this a priority!

Kwahadi Dancers

On Saturday 25th June a group of US Boy Scouts known as the Kwahadi Dancers are visiting Ratlingate and performing a show for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and any parents or friends. The cost of the show, which is based on traditional North American Dances, is £1.50 per person.
As cars are not allowed on the site there are two ways of getting to Ratlingate. You can either park at Grinsdale and catch the shuttle minibus or you can be dropped off at the end of Ratlingate Lane and walk in.
I will be at the end of the lane between 6.15 and 6.30 to meet any unaccompanied Cubs or Beavers who wish to go.
Please let me know if your child wishes to go by telephoning 01228 594622 or by e-mail.

Kandersteg Information

The following is the text from aletter everyone going to Kandersteg will be receivingn soon.

An A – Z of Kandersteg Questions

Accommodation
Accommodation is restricted due to the popularity of the centre. You will be sharing rooms based on gender and on age. None of the accommodation is en-suite so remember to pack your PJs!

Activity Timetable
Please see attached sheet.

Alcohol

You cannot purchase alcohol, even if it is legal in Switzerland, whilst you are away.

Behaviour
Quite simply we will only accept the best behaviour. No foul language or aggression will be accepted. The rules of the Scout Association are the rules that we work to. Swiss law is very strict – remember that! Bruce, Don and I will not be sympathetic if you misbehave – leave your idiocy at home.

Cameras

You will have the opportunity to take some stunning photographs. You may bring a camera but it is at your own risk.

Contact Details

If you need to contact the party for any reason please use Rachel Webster (our Emergency Contact) first. Alternative means of contact are:

David Hodgkiss 07780990404

Bruce Kirton 07899960575

Don McCutcheon 07802289818

Departure Details

We will meet at the Scout Hut at 10.00pm on Friday 14th August. You will be sleeping there before the bus collects us at around 5.45am the next morning. Bring your sleeping bag. We’ll leave this locked up in the office and it can be collected when we return.

Emergency Contact
Our Emergency contact is Rachel Webster.
She can be contacted on 01228 540878 or 07xxxxxx If you urgently need to contact us please contact Rachel first. She will have our itinerary and be informed of any changes.

Equipment

An equipment list is enclosed. Remember to pack a variety of clothing that allows you to layer up if you’re cold. Micro-fleeces, a fleece and waterproofs are good warm layers. If you suffer from the cold or are taking part in the Glacier Workshop then thermal underwear is a good idea. We are all going up the Jungfrau on the Wednesday, the last time I was there the temperature with wind chill was -27c on the top. Make sure that you have hat and gloves.

Flight Details
We will be flying from East Midlands Airport by EasyJet to Geneva. The flight details are:
Saturday 15 August

East Midlands To Genevaflight 6581 ; dep. 13:05; arr. 15:45
Sunday 23 August

Geneva To East Midlandsflight 6582 ; dep. 16:45; arr. 17:25

Insurance
Insurance has been purchased from Scout Insurance Services for each party member. Should you wish your child to have supplementary cover then please contact your insurance broker.

International Scouting
The whole purpose of this expedition is to allow you to build up international relationships. Make the most of each opportunity. Sitting in your room will not be allowed. Talk to people, mingle and find out more. There’s never nothing to do at Kandersteg.

Knives
Don’t bring any! If you wish to bring a souvenir knife home (every other shop sells Swiss Army Knives) then it must have a blade which cannot lock and is less than 3 inches long.

Luggage

Each person has a 16kg luggage allowance. This is sufficient for the week. I suggest that your gear is packed in a rucksack as you have to walk from the station to the centre along a footpath by a river. It isn’t really suitable for suitcases. You will also need this rucksack on your overnight expedition to carry clothes, food and equipment into the Alps. A small daysack should also be taken as hand luggage on the flight. This will be useful for carrying drinks, waterproofs and packed lunches.

In order to save weight on the flight everyone should travel in their boots. It’s a simple thing but saves considerable weight and allows you pack those little essentials.

Mobile Phones
None of the Scouts should take a mobile phone. These are not necessary. The Explorers can take their phones if they wish. If they do it will allow us to give them greater freedom as we are able to stay in touch.
There are no charging facilities so don’t bring i-pods, psp’s or similar. Anyway – you won’t have time to play!

Passports
I need a copy of everyone’s passport before we go. This should be a photocopy of the details page. Make sure that your passport has at least six months left on it before it expires. Everyone will also need an EHIC card

Go to
https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/home.do to complete the form and claim a card.

Spending Money
Each of the Scouts will be allowed to take the equivalent of £80 in Swiss Francs. This will need to be paid to the group before the end of July and we will ensure that the money is available for each child. The money will be held on a card to avoid loss and distributed as necessary.
Each Scout will also need £20 in Sterling for use at the airport, for drinks on the flight and at motorway service stations.
We will take the Explorers money too if they wish, however they may wish to take charge of their own. There is no limit for Explorers beyond that it should be a reasonable amount.

Those little things…
Pack a water bottle, a bin liner and a head torch. They’ll come in useful when you’re on your expedition.
You’ll also need a sleeping bag liner – there are no sheets and a pillowcase.

Uniform
Everyone will travel in uniform. Uniform shirts should be packed in luggage for when we arrive at the centre along with their group necker. On the journey each Scout / Explorer / Leader must wear the standard uniform polo shirt along with a UK necker. Neckers will be provided for those who have not been abroad before however the Explorers who went to KISC in 2006 were issued with a necker and should use this. Replacement neckers will cost £8 and are available. Contact me for details. You cannot swap your UK necker, it must be available for you to wear on the return journey.
A union flag badge will need to be sewn on your uniform shirt – these will be provided in plenty of time before we leave.
We would prefer it if everyone travelled in uniform activity trousers, however, if you do not have these then you must travel in standard school trousers. Remember that are representing the UK Scout Association as you travel and that as a consequence your appearance matters.

Walking Boots
These are essential.

Spring Camp Update

Good News! We have been able to reduce the cost of the Spring Camp by 20% - bringing it down to £60. This means that the balance is now £40. And who says you don't get gifts at Easter!
The cost will be the same for both Cubs and Scouts – however the activities will differ. The Scout leaders will contact the Scouts soon to provide further details of their programme.

I have booked Archery, a Low Ropes Course, Orienteering and a half days climbing for the Cubs. We will also be undertaking some creative video and photography which we hope to upload to our website during the weekend. If your child still wishes to go then please contact me at home or by text. I can add extra Cubs to our number but I need to confirm activity numbers sooner rather than later.

Cubs - Amended Timetable / St. George's Day

An amended timetable and revised programme can now be downloaded from the website. This replaces the previous timetable which had incorrect dates for April.

Please note that next week the Cubs will meet in the Scout Hut but they will NOT require a bike. This activity will now place after Easter and I can cycle again!

There has also been a change to the St. George's Day Service. It is now on Sunday 19th April.

Sponsored Shave Off

Dear All,
As many of you will have noticed I have not had a shave for the last 13 weeks and am now beginning to look like a wildman of the north. Subsequently I will be having a sponsored shave off on Thursday 2nd April 8:30pm and will be splitting all the sponsorship money between Group funds and the Kandersteg trip.

I hope that I will receive you full support and that we can raise some much needed funds for the Group. There is a sponsorship form available for you to show your support in the Scout Hut and I hope that I will see you there for the Big Shave Off.

Yours sincerely,

Spring Camp 2009 (Cubs)

Dear Parents,

Spring Camp 2009

We are holding a Spring Camp at Great Tower, Windermere between Friday 22nd May and Monday 25th May. The Cubs will be sleeping indoors whilst the Scouts will camping outside close-by.

We will be leaving the Scout Hut by bus at 6.00pm prompt and returning at approximately 4.00pm on the Monday afternoon.

This will be a very active camp, it is planned for the Cubs to go walking, try archery, orienteering, tackle a low ropes course and learn to climb/abseil. Subsequently it is a little more expensive than usual. The cost will be £75 (based on 20 Cubs going.) Should more Cubs than this attend, then the cost will fall as the accommodation has a fixed price and is not available pro-rota.

I know that you all appreciate how hard the group works to keep the costs for camps down. This camp will still be very good value.

In order to plan effectively and book the activities I would like to know numbers by next week, April 1st, along with a deposit of £20. Should there be insufficient numbers then I will be forced to cancel the camp on this occasion.

I look forward to positive responses.

Yours sincerely,

David Hodgkiss (Akela)

Skiing - Some last minute news

Can parents please make sure that they do not block the path orr changing room area tomorrow. Last week because of the crush of parents at the end of the first session people were forced to walk on the grass. This upsets the Cricket Club and meant that all the boots had to be cleaned for the mud made the boots impossible to use.

So please - let the skiers through and make sure that they stay off the grass.

In order to help with the issue of skis and boots can the first group make sure that they are at the ski centre by 1.45pm.The second group should arrive around 2.45pm to give Eric the chance to kit you all out before the first session have finished. This will make things easier.

Finally, please make sure that all skiers listen carefully to all the instruction that they are given. Following instructions will enable everyone to make progress!

The cost for the day will be £20.00 per child. The cost includes the hire of boots, skis and helmets which are now compulsory for everyone under eighteen. Please can you bring the completed reply slips to either Cubs or Scouts on March 18th and 19th so that we have a good idea of numbers.

Each person will need to bring suitable clothes that cover the entire body, waterproofs, gloves and a packed lunch. A small amount of spending money is also advisable as you can buy hot drinks, ice creams and more in the centre café. Last year many of the Cubs / Scouts brought games or MP3 players to occupy themselves on the journey (PSP, Nintendo DS, Gameboy etc.) This is acceptable but these are brought at the owner’s risk.

Yours sincerely,

David Hodgkiss – Cub Scout Leader

John Wylie – Scout Leader

Lost! One of our coats is missing!

Yes - one of our coats is missing or to be more accurate one of our Beaver's coats was mistakenly taken home a couple of weeks ago and has not been returned. Please can you check that you don't have a coat that isn't yours hanging in your home. If you have then contact Lisa and we can arrange for one Beaver to be very happy indeed when his favourite coat is returned.

Programme Changes (Cubs)

Please can all the Cubs bring a small frying pan and a carrier bag to Cubs tonight. We have changed the programme slightly and will be doing a little simple cooking rather than Scientist in a night which has now been put back until next term.

St. George's Day has also been changed to Sunday 19th April at St. Aidan's Church rather than Sunday 26th April as was originally scheduled. 13th Carlisle Cubs will be providing the Cubs for the service that day (to carry a flag and help renew the promise and law) so a good turn out would be appreciated.

Skiing 2009

13th Carlisle Scout Group,

Dear Parents,

Ski Training –and March 1st – 8th – 15th – 22nd.
On March 28th we intend to take the Scouts and oldest Cubs (sixers, Seconders and those in Year 5) to the Edinburgh dry ski slope at Hill-End for a days skiing. However, in order for this to be a success we have arranged four hour long ski lessons at Carlisle Ski Centre (based at Carlisle Cricket Club) before we go. These lessons will cost £20.00 and have been booked for four successive Sunday afternoons starting on1st March. The lessons will cover the basic skills needed to use the slopes safely and make sure that each child is aware of their own limitations.
The lessons are well paced and fun. We will be splitting the Cubs and Scouts into two groups (A & B). Group A will start at 1.45pm with the issue of equipment (boots and skis) and end shortly after 3.00pm when the equipment has been returned, Group B will start at 3:00pm with the issue of equipment (boots and skis) and end around 4.15pm when the equipment has been returned. All your child will need is warm long sleeved clothing and gloves to protect their hands.
If your child would like to take part then can you please complete the following permission form and return it to either Cubs or Scouts as soon as possible along with a cheque for £20.00.
Obviously you may have questions about this and if so please do not hesitate to contact any of the following Leaders.

Bruce Kirton (Group Scout Leader)
David Hodgkiss (Cub Scout Leader)
John Wylie (Scout Leader)
Kenny Boom (Chairman)

I give permission for my child ________________________________ to take part in the four
skiing lessons arranged at Carlisle Ski Centre.

If you have previously skied then please indicate your level or grade here.
Not skied before, safe on green slopes, safe on blue slopes, safe on red slopes, safe on black slopes, don’t know.
Level or grade _________________________________

I understand that the training will be on Sunday 1st – 8th – 15th – 22nd March.
I enclose a cheque for £20.00.

Home Help Badge

Don’t forget that to complete the Home Help badge the Cubs must keep their bedrooms tidy during the half-term. This means making their bed, hovering and dusting. They have already completed the sewing, ironing and cooking parts of the badge at Cubs. They have also helped clean the Scout Hut during the year. Don’t fail to complete the very last part!

Congratulations to the following Cubs who were presented with their Chief Scout's Silver Award last night: Charlie McSkeane, Max Graham, Angus Moffat, Lucy Hodgkiss, Matthew McKeown and Drew Moore. All of them have worked to achieve this. Well done.

We also presented Sixer and Seconder badges to 11 Cubs last night.
The Sixers are Izzy Roberts, Wiliam Pledge, Josh Park, Adam Brown, Adam Robson and Matthew McKeown.
The Seconders are Harry Webster, Matthew Watson, Matthew Wrightson, Olivia Graham, Alex Harkness and James Atkinson.

Thirteen Cubs also left to start Scouts. Between them they had gained 302 Nights Away. This was a fantastic achievement and I am proud of all of them. They have probably set a record that will never be broken.

The Cub's loss is the Scout's gain. We'll miss you all and know that you will continue to enjoy your Scouting experience.
